president obama looking down during the debate. i have a memory of 2008 where we remember the first debate with obama and john mccain, where mccain did not make eye contact for much of the debate with obama. looking down. surprised by romney's strength and not engaged. >> he was intense. he leaned in. it was like he had a lot of coffee before the debate. and he was just going after the president. my question for you, joe, is why can't he transfer this to the campaign trail sf. >> that's what everybody said last night. i think he was comfortable talking about facts. talking about information. i don't think -- >> he wasn't explaining a lot of stuff. >> just hanging out with the kids. >> we're talking about speeches and rallies, things people want to hear. i bet the americans watching last night are the same people going to the rallies. they want to hear more. >> and that's a challenge for mitt romney. you heard that after everybody got over the shock of how great mitt romney and did and how poorly the president did. now can he conver

the obama campaign is making an effort to portray romney as having been dishonest in that debate? can that argument be effective when you're trying to reach some of these undecided voters who at this late hour are still in fact undecided. >> i think it's a mistake for the president. it sounds like sour grapes that he wasn't able to stand up to romney who was lying. that's a kind negativity. the president needs to tell what's he wants to do. one of the things was his own agenda was so thin, that he wasn't able to convey to the public that he had an offensive, a effective second term agenda. i think the second thing he has to do is he really has to bear down and answer some more detailed questions about his own agenda, about his own debt reduction plan, which as andrea mitchell pointed out that evening, really has a lot of holes in it. so i think he would be best to not complain about, not lambaste his opponent, but really kind of hit the books, get down to work, portray a more positive agenda the next time around. and for goodness sakes, look at the camera, don't look down. >> you

if the obama campaign can win the post debate they can make up some ground in the next couple of days in terms of what happened last night. >> and andrea, i don't disagree. i think the next couple of days are crucial for the romney campaign. they've got to put more meat on the bones and let people know his record in massachusetts has someone who could govern in a bipartisan way and get effective legislation done, that's important. telling the full story on taxes, how you don't want to have a big massive tax cut for rich people. if you get rid of that talking point for the democrats they that's a bonus for the romney campaign. the romney campaign has to be aggressive in the post debate setting to make sure that they are getting their points across because you know the obama team is going hard against them and this is where it's going to be won or lost. >> one of the things that mitt romney did last night, he was giving personal examples of speaking to this person who had a problem, or this person who had a problem, people he met along the trail. he talked about the suffering of the mid

how many debates did we step away, it's hillary, it's obama. but joe biden won this debate. i wrote that column four or five times in 2007, 2008. think way back. when joe biden first ran for president in the 1988 cycle. that was the plagiarism thing. but besides that, when he was running, this guy was the star order of the field. he was a young senator at the time but it was his oratory that set him apart from the rest of the field. i look at this and i say, i've always thought that obama's biggest weaknesses one of the weaknesses is debates. i think it's biden's biggest strength. i'm setting the bar really high. >> the onion teaches ruthlessly with that shirtless joe biden waxing his -- it's horrible, right? he's sort of an elder statesman of the party. you have the young upstart ryan. >> yeah. i mean, look, i agree with steve to a certain degree. i think this vice presidential debate will be reminiscent of 2000 when you had dick cheney and joe lieberman. two very smart individuals on the ticket. very thoughtful in terms of the vice presidential debate. there was not a lot

the good news for president obama if he performs well in the next two debates he could end up becoming the debate champion of the year. and that poor performance will become a very vague, distant memory, however, the fact he is becoming comedy fodder is a problem. >> if you have a challenger coming in, does really well the first time, do they continue to come in and do well or does the standing politician come back and dukes up, go for it? >> if you're a republican and you look for the history, you like to think of 1980, in this case, where ronald reagan did very well against jimmy carter, carter had 52 hostages in iran, you know, long gasoline lines. yet people didn't quite imagine reagan in the white house. reagan turned that around in the debates, and of course won a landslide victory. however, there is not going to be a landslide for any of the other candidates, we are a red/blue country, i think the elections will be closer to something like that 2004 -- kerry/bush than it will be anything else. >> yeah, with regard to what you're looking for out of the vice presidential debate on

we've got the debate starting next week. it's a long way to go, it's politics. anything could happen. right now the obama campaign is solidly and consistently ahead. tactically what that means is the obama campaign has to convert being ahead in people's preferences to actual votes. since they are clearly ahead a good time to get those votes cast is right now. because thanks to early voting people are casting ballots right now. so this lead that they would in the polls can be turned into actual votes while they're still ahead even if they don't end up being this far ahead by election day. iowa became the first swing state in the nation where voters are actually voting early in person. iowa has these really interesting rules where if you get enough signatures from your area you can ask to have a pop-up polling place. sort of like if food trucks offered voting. obama supporters arranged for a pop-up polling place at the university of iowa today. they had the first lady go to the university of northern iowa. it was not a get out the vote event. rather, it was a much
